It's been a couple weeks since I've logged all my plays on here. Sorry about that. It's been a little hectic around here at Sound FM.

This will be the last week for this site. Yes bigger and better things are about to occur for Mixed Frequencies. Now at a new time, 1-4pm on Mondays, and soon to be at a new site. This will air on the 39th premiere of Sesame Street on August 11th. I actually kindof want to watch it. My favourite part of it: the attempt to recreate the one-shot feel of the original video, and every Feist video for that matter. I've actually been on set for the shooting of Sesame Street before (in the Netherlands no less.. Big Bird is Blue there, it's creepy) and based on that my guess is this was ridiculously complicated to film. But it turned out not too badly.

I guess they cut out the "1 2 3 4 5 6 9 and 10" part so they wouldn't confuse the youngsters.

Oh and Neil Patrick Harris will be on the show as well. Pretty sure this is going to be a great season.

Sickness

Sadly I was sick in bed this morning when I should have been at CKMS. For some reason getting up and biking to the station with a high fever, sore throat, lightheadedness and all that fun stuff didn't appeal to me at 5am. Especially since I hadn't really slept at all.

Anyways I'm still covering for KLP this Friday from 9 till Noon. So tune in then for your last fix of Mixed Frequencies until September!

Yes it's true, after this Wednesday Mixed Frequencies will no longer be on CKMS for a little while. I'm moving back home for the summer term and although I will be back in Waterloo a lot, I can't commit to a slot for a few months.

But don't be down. KLP has asked me to fill in for her on the Sideshow Continuum this Friday (the 18th) as she is away. So there will be three hours of Mixed Frequencies goodness from 9 am till noon. That's right. Mixed Frequencies. 9am to Noon. Friday the 18th. I'm done exams so I'll be in a great mood.. it's going to be a lot of fun! So make sure to email me a request at mfckms@gmail.com or call in during the show! I'd love to hear from you. The number is 519-884-CKMS (2567). And remember that you can listen in online by going to www.ckmsfm.ca and clicking "Webcast".

But other then that, there are lots of amazing shows on CKMS for you to enjoy. From the Sideshow Continuum to the Rock Show to the Argument to Stumbling Upon Moksha. There's a whole world of music availible to you on CKMS. Check out the program guide for more info. And if you think you'd like to try your hand at doing a show, CKMS is always looking for volunteers!

And don't worry about that whole funding fiasco, we are not dead yet! The volunteers at CKMS, the staff and the board (myself included in that) are all dedicated to keeping CKMS alive. Over the summer there is most likely going to be a lot of change at the station.. it's very exciting times that's for sure.

It's been a fun 7 months. Who knows what tomorrow will bring...

Sorry about the absenteeism last Wednesday. I was asleep in bed back home. Horrah for reading week. I hope you enjoyed Kat and her music selection.

This week will be great. I've been working all week and listening to a Toronto based Alternative Rock commercial station. AKA I've heard the same 15 songs for the last 5 days. It has been terrible, but it did make me appreciate CKMS that much more.

Oh, and I'll also have some thoughts on the referendum for ya. Oh yes, this will be a doozy.

Straylight Run put on a great show, just as I expected. Here are some pictures from the night, please excuse the quality.

And a special thanks should go out to Will from Straylight Run. He put myself and 4 friends on the guest list for tonights show in London, but alas, due to road conditions we won't be able to make it.

University of Waterloo Radio Station's Survival is in Jeopardy

CKMS-FM Radio Waterloo, the campus and community radio station based
on the University of Waterloo campus is in danger of going off the
air in September 2008, as a result of a student referendum to remove
all student funding.

The Federation of Students, at a council meeting held on Sunday
January 13, passed the following motion: “BIRT the Federation of
Students approve the following question for referendum,: 'Do you
support the removal of the $5.50 per term fee for CKMS, the campus
community radio station at the University of Waterloo, effective the
Fall term of 2008?'” The referendum is to be held concurrently with
the 2008-2009 Federation of Students Elections some time in February.

CKMS-FM has been broadcasting from the University of Waterloo campus
since October 15, 1977. Programming on CKMS-FM is produced by
volunteers from both the University of Waterloo and the Kitchener-
Waterloo community. CKMS-FM can be heard on the FM dial at 100.3
throughout the Waterloo region.

Station Manager Heather Majaury says, “The irretrievable loss of CKMS-
FM to the campus and community would leave a huge void. Voices that
currently have access to the airwaves would be silenced: students,
students groups, individual community members, and community groups.
For example, The Chinese Student Association, The Aboriginal
Students' Association, The World of Chamber Music (produced by the
Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society), multicultural groups
(Latin American, Portuguese, Indian, Arabic, Islamic); not to mention
the tremendous amount of independent music and genres heard no where
else on the local dial.”

(or slated to be delivering) student-driven entrepreneurship content
and speaking in general it is the only the radio station that UW
students have easy access to, therefore there is strong collaboration
potential with programs such as media studies and speech
communication.”

Malajube's Le Crabe

So I'm a bit late with this one, but I was tangled up in birthday celebrations since seeing last Thursday's show and haven't been able to write anything down since.

And I can't find a jpg of a poster so you'll have to do without the filler for this one.

I was a little disappointed that Malajube didn't play much of their older stuff, but it was still a great performance with some epic songs played.

The opening bands offered some surprises as well. First off was Hollerado (pronounced like Colorado with and H in place of the C). These guys put on an amazing performance which made me run over to their merch table right after the set and pick up their 'Demo in a Bag'. You can listen and download one of there songs, 'Americanarama', for free on their website www.hollerado.com. You'll be hearing that one on the show this upcoming Wednesday.. and perhaps one more.

Next was D'Urbervilles with great set where they played a bunch of numbers off of their soon to be released EP. I'll be playing some of their older stuff as well this Wednesday.

It was awesome. The Gig actually turned out to be a pretty good venue, despite the rows of seating. There was a good space at the front of the stage and we had a pretty good mosh going on during some of the songs. Not as many people as I'm sure the bands would've liked but it was still a good show.
